The Mother of God wears a shawl over her garment. It is most often trimmed with gold and adorned with three gold stars, one on the forehead and two on the shoulders, signifying her virginity before, during, and after having given birth to baby Jesus. Beside the Theotokos we find the Greek letters: MP 0Y, Meter Theou = Mother of God.
