Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a town about 10km south of Jerusalem, toward the end of Herod the Great’s reign as king of the Jews (37-4 BC). The nativity scene is a depiction of the birth of Jesus as described in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, Mary ‘wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger’ (Luke 2:7).
